D’Shyla Duncan — better known as Shyla The Scholar is an author, educational advocate, and scholarship strategist committed to helping students, especially those from underserved communities like her hometown Flint, Michigan, achieve academic success without financial strain.
D'Shyla earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees debt-free through scholarships, fellowships, and strategic planning. Along the way, she discovered her deep commitment to educational equity and the belief that students should never feel discouraged from pursuing higher education because of cost.
Growing up in Flint taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the power of community. Those values guided me through college and into my professional journey. I’ve served as a Graduate Assistant in the Office of Fellowships at Grand Valley State University and worked as an Environmental Justice Specialist and Acting Children’s Health Coordinator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 1.
From MC’ing agency events to building relationships with community leaders to managing complex grants, I’ve learned that meaningful change starts by investing in people — especially young people.
ShylaTheScholar's mission is simple:
You don't have to be rich to graduate debt-free, you just have to have the right information.
Education should be accessible, not overwhelming
Students don’t need to be perfect — they need opportunity
Representation matters
Communities thrive when we uplift the next generation
Every student deserves a champion
